Enter the same age, height and weight into three calorie calculators and you may still get three different daily totals. That does not automatically mean two are broken. They often use a different resting equation, a different activity factor or even a different definition of the number on screen.

Do not solve this by averaging every website. First check four things: resting expenditure, activity factor, what the result represents and whether a goal adjustment or rounding has already been applied.

1. The resting equation may be different

A daily energy estimate often starts with a prediction of resting expenditure. Common equations include Mifflin-St Jeor, Harris-Benedict and Schofield. They were developed from different study populations and do not all use the same variables or coefficients.

The Mifflin-St Jeor paper uses weight, height, age and a sex-specific coefficient. A calculator using Harris-Benedict can therefore show a different resting number from the same inputs. Neither website has measured your resting expenditure with indirect calorimetry; both are predicting it from group data.

The population matters too. A study of 362 healthy adults found that equation accuracy varied with age, BMI, sex and ethnic group. Another validation study found Mifflin-St Jeor useful on average but less accurate among participants with obesity. A scientific equation is still not an individual measurement.

2. Activity often creates the largest gap

After estimating rest, most calculators multiply by an activity factor. This is where differences of hundreds of calories can appear. The FAO/WHO/UNU adult energy-requirements report groups adult PAL values into broad ranges: 1.40–1.69 for sedentary or light activity, 1.70–1.99 for active or moderately active lifestyles and 2.00–2.40 for vigorous activity.

Suppose estimated resting expenditure is 1,600 calories. PAL 1.4 gives 2,240 calories; PAL 1.8 gives 2,880. That is a 640-calorie difference without changing the resting equation.

Websites also describe activity levels differently. Exercise three times per week may count as moderate on one site, while another asks about desk work, daily steps or physical labour. Read the description and consider the whole week. One training hour does not automatically cancel every other seated hour.

3. The displayed numbers may mean different things

Some calculators immediately show weight-loss, maintenance and weight-gain targets. Others apply a deficit as soon as you select a goal. Another may lead with BMR or resting expenditure and show TDEE only later.

Compare like with like:

Check units as well. A food calorie is normally a kilocalorie, while kilojoules are a different unit. Rounding to tens is ordinary. A difference of a few calories is not meaningful, but a gap of 300 or 600 deserves a check of the equation and activity choice.

4. More inputs do not guarantee a better answer

Body-fat percentage, workout count or step count may add useful information only if the equation uses that input appropriately and the measurement itself is reliable. A body-fat estimate from a consumer scale can introduce another uncertain number. Exercise can also be counted twice if the daily activity setting already includes it.

More fields can therefore add information or add false precision. Prefer a calculator that exposes its equation, PAL value and result definition. Treat claims of individual or clinical accuracy cautiously when no individual measurement took place.

Choose one useful starting point

Use this order:

  1. Compare resting expenditure first. A large gap points to a different equation or an input error.
  2. Write down the PAL value. This often explains most of the difference.
  3. Check whether the number is maintenance or a target intake. Do not subtract a deficit before identifying the neutral estimate.
  4. Choose one transparent method. Do not switch calculators every day to find a more attractive answer.
  5. Treat the result as a starting estimate. Only a consistent period of your own records can test whether the assumption fits your current circumstances.
