Kitchen Scale Buyer’s Guide (Features that Matter)
By Kcalbit Editorial · Published August 15, 2025 · Updated August 19, 2025

Accuracy, capacity, readability and cleaning—what actually matters before you buy.

A good kitchen scale makes logging fast and objective. You don’t need a premium model—just the right features.

Must-have features

  • Accuracy: 1 g resolution (0.1 g for coffee is nice but niche).
  • Capacity: 5 kg/11 lb covers most use; 3 kg is often enough.
  • Tare & units: Quick tare and grams/ounces with one button.
  • Readable display: Large numbers, backlight, stays visible with a plate on top.
  • Easy cleaning: Flat surface, minimal seams, wipe clean.

Nice-to-haves

Auto-off delay (longer than 2 minutes), rubber feet, replaceable batteries, and a compact footprint.

How to use it well

  • Weigh before and after cooking for accuracy (oils evaporate, water cooks off).
  • Weigh sauces by difference (tare the bottle, pour, read negative grams).
  • Weigh a few staple meals; you’ll learn portions and rely less on the scale later.
